Who will be Newcastle United’s Next Manager?

Odds on Steve Bruce’ replacement

The big news in the footballing world over the past week has undoubtedly been the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover of Newcastle United. The Magpies new found wealth has elevated them to a completely new level financially with a host of top-class players being tipped to make big-money moves to the north east. Off the pitch it now seems a matter of when not if Steve Bruce will be replaced as Newcastle United manager. Bruce is set to take charge of his 1000th match this coming weekend however, that may well be his last in the home dugout at St James Park. Speculation over Bruce’s successor is inevitable and here at freebet.com we’ll take a look at the latest odds offered by BetVictor for Newcastle United’s next permanent manager.

Frank Lampard

Odds: 5/1

Former Chelsea and Derby County boss, Lampard, is the bookies’ favourite to succeed Steve Bruce on Tyneside. Lampard has been out of work since being axed by Chelsea in January. The former England international midfielder departed Stamford Bridge with the Blues languishing in ninth in the Premier League but it his perhaps his reputation as a player that could tempt the new Newcastle United owners to take a punt on the 43-year-old. Lampard is a household name and a Premier League legend; he could be just what the new owners need to attract the calibre of player to St James Park that will make them a major force.

Unai Emery

Odds: 6/1

Unai Emery’s first spell in England was far from successful however the former Arsenal boss has hit the ground running back in familiar Spanish surroundings. The question is whether Emery is ill-suited to the Premier League or simply took on an impossible task in trying to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Emery became the most successful manager in Europa League history last season as he guided Villarreal to glory. The 49-year-old had won three Europa League titles at Sevilla and a fourth trophy with Villarreal has gone a long way towards repairing the damage caused to his reputation by his stint in North London.

Zinedine Zidane

Odds: 7/1

As a player, Zinedine Zidane was undoubtedly one of the greatest footballers of his generation yet his achievements as a manager arguably stand up against anything he achieved on the pitch. During his immensely successful first spell in charge of Real Madrid, Zidane won three consecutive Champions League titles. Zizou departed the Bernabeu at the end of the 2017/18 season before returning just ten months later. In his first full season during his second spell in charge, Zidane claimed a second La Liga title.

The appointment of Zidane would be a huge coup for Newcastle’s new mega-rich owners but with an infinite amount of money to spend the, Frenchman may well be tempted to join the Toon Army’s revolution.

Brendan Rodgers

Odds: 10/1

The first man on the list currently employed. Brendan Rodgers has moved to distance himself from the Newcastle United job but there are concerns the Leicester City boss has taken the Foxes are far as he can. On a modest budget, Leicester City have punched above their weight in recent years. The 2020/21 FA Cup winners have fallen just short of Champions League qualification in successive seasons but currently sit in a lowly 13th in the Premier League.

Despite a difficult start to the current campaign, Rodgers’ stock remains at an all-time high. However, with Pep Guardiola entering the last 18 months of his Manchester City contract, there are suggestions that the Foxes boss is holding out for the top job at the Etihad.

Selected others

  • Lucien Favre: 12/1

  • Roberto Martinez: 14/1

  • Paulo Fonseca: 20/1
  • Graeme Jones: 20/1
