As Leeds United fight for their lives in the Premier League, will new boss Sam Allardyce prove to be the saviour which many believe him to be?
Leeds United have made a no-frills appointment with new manager Sam Allardyce who has been drafted in purely to keep the West Yorkshire outfit in the Premier League for another season. This certainly isn’t a long-term appointment and the new boss has been given just one remit – to ensure that premier League football is on offer at Elland Road next term.
Leeds United dropped into the relegation zone following a 2-1 defeat away to Manchester City on Saturday, however they were in free-fall under former boss Javi Gracia with their last clean sheet being in the Spaniard’s first game in the hot-seat, a 1-0 victory over bottom side Southampton.
Since then Leeds have collected just eight points from their subsequent eleven league outings while conceding 30 goals in that time. Under the former Watford manager they had a dismal goal difference of -13 in eleven games.
Clearly a change of manager was needed to give the side some fighting chance of Premier League survival, however they have yet to face a Newcastle United side edging closer to a Champions league berth, a West Ham United outfit eager to move further from the drop zone and a Tottenham Hotspur side still battling for a European berth.
Allardyce will know only too well the enormity of the task facing him – especially so following the weekend defeat – and time is fast running out for the Whites with only three games left to play. Big Sam will set Leeds United up not to lose matches and the main objective won’t be simply to win games but to not concede goals, something they were always going to struggle to do against title favourites Manchester City. The best bookmakers for free bets have Leeds United priced as second favourites for the drop at a general price of 2/5 and it’s hard to escape the conclusion that the West Yorkshire outfit will be plying their trade in the Championship next season.
