Find out which States have, or are about to legalize betting.

Each day brings something new to the world of betting in the US, with various state lawmakers as well as Congress considering sports betting legalization.

Though America as a whole has a long way to go before it enjoys complete betting freedom like many countries in Europe, slowly we are seeing more states launching betting products and services.

Through this blog, we take a look at the status of each state, providing an update on where each area is at when it comes to online betting laws.

New Jersey

New Jersey is a state that stands tall as a US betting and casino provider, leading the way when its gambling restriction was lifted back in 2013.

Popular sites New Jersey bettors are making use of for casino and poker include 888 US, Betfair, FanDuel, Tropicana Online, Unibet, Poker Stars NJ, Virgin Online Casino, Sugar House Online Casino, Borgata Online, Caesars Casino Online and many, many more!

However, each online casino must appoint a land-based partner/licensee; a setup that many states are adopting.

Currently, there are 10 land-based sportsbooks and 13 online sportsbook betting apps available for use in New Jersey. Popular options include DraftKings, Bet Stars, FanDuel, 888 Sport, Hard Rock and Bet America.

As one of the states that have permitted online gambling for the longest length of time, New Jersey is inevitably the state where you can access the biggest variety of betting AND casino sites. This has got to a point where every major casino operator owns a New Jersey-based online casino site.

Nevada

Given the major gambling profile held by Las Vegas you won’t be surprised to learn that Nevada was the first state to legalize online sports betting. In fact, most Las Vegas casinos now offer sports betting apps that allow its users to bet online from anywhere within the state of Nevada. Major players in the Las Vegas gambling arena are prominent names in the online sports betting world, including Atlantis Sports, Caesars, MGM Resorts and William Hill.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is fairly new to the world of online sport betting, with laws being passed in May of 2019. However, since then, the state has welcomed a variety of online sportsbooks. But, like in New Jersey, each of the online betting products need to be tied to a physical bricks and mortar casino.

As it stands, Kambi are offering online sportsbooks via SugarHouse Casino, Parx Casino and Racing and Rivers Casino. However, we are expected to see the launch of WIlliam Hill in Pennsylvania in the coming months. This is in addition to Scientific Games and FanDuel; both of which are promising the very best in online betting technology.

West Virginia

West Virginia lawmakers have started issuing gambling licenses following the ruling from the Supreme Court of the United States of America back in August 2018. This made West Virginia the fifth state where online gambling was legal. FanDuel and Penn National were the first betting sites to go live in the state, still holding a strong prominence in the area today. However, many other sportsbooks are now in operation in West Virginia.

In November, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort launched its William Hill Sportsbook; a move that will soon give bettors of the state a state-of-the-art betting facility where they can access thousands of dollars' worth of risk-free free bets.

Mississippi

On the exact same day that New Jersey announced their lifting of the sports betting ban, Mississippi permitted wagering at two MGM betting properties, the Beau Rivage and Gold Strike Tunica. But, as it stands, sports bets need to be taken in person. However, conversation around mobile betting is beginning to open up.

Land-based casinos where sports betting is currently offered includes:

  • 1st Jackpot Casino Tunica
  • Boomtown Casino – Biloxi
  • Gold Strike Casino Resort
  • Island View Casino
  • Palace Casino
  • Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort
  • Riverwalk Casino
  • WaterView Casino and Hotel
  • Silver Slipper Casino

New Mexico

If looking to place a sports bet in New Mexico, then you will need to head to Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel; the first tribal casino in the US that operates on native land in a state that does not offer legal sports betting.

Finding a loophole in the law, New Mexico were able to offer sports betting without changing its laws.

Rhode Island

Twin River Casino in Lincoln processed the state of Rhode Island’s first ever sports bet in November of last year; just a few months after Government passed a new betting law that permitted them to do so. Defining a huge appetite for sports betting, we then saw online sports betting launched in September of this year. However, punters have to register their online betting accounts in person, with Rhode Island officials incredibly strict when it comes to account verification and betting safety.

Arkansas

Right now, mobile online wagering is not permitted in Arkansas. However, sports betting via land-based casino establishments is. Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort facility in Arkansas is currently the only place taking sports bets legally.

Delaware

Delaware is one of the latest states to change their rules when it comes to betting, processing single-game wagers as well as bets on National Football League (NFL) games through the state lottery. Sports bets can be placed at Dover Downs, Delaware Park and Harrington Raceway. We can however expect online sports betting to open up in the next 12 months.

New York

The whole of America has for years been waiting for New York to get on board with sports betting. And, in 2019, they finally did, unveiling its first sports betting product ahead of this year's NFL 2019 season. Though online betting is yet to be rolled out in the Big Apple, daily fantasy sports and horse racing betting are legal; all of which can be arranged through physical casinos.
