Weekend Premier League/Championship
Premier League & Championship Round-Up - 16th/17th March 2019
The 2019 Cheltenham Festival may be hogging the headlines right now but there’s plenty of Premier League and Championship football coming our way this weekend with the bookmakers offering a wealth of free bets on the weekend sporting action.
The action from Prestbury Park has thrown up plenty of top-quality entertainment but tomorrow is the final day of the festival and we can then turn our attention to the full line-up of domestic football, the TV cameras on hand to bring us live coverage of two key games this weekend.
The weekend Premier League offering gets underway at the traditional kick-off time of 3pm on Saturday afternoon with AFC Bournemouth, Burnley and West Ham United entertaining Newcastle United, Leicester City and Huddersfield Town respectively.
Bournemouth and Newcastle are both resigned to a mid-table finish this season, the Cherries sitting twelfth in the division with just three points separating them from 13th-placed Newcastle as things stand. The Magpies have certainly shown plenty of spirit for the manner in which they have hauled themselves away from the relegation zone over the past few weeks and while we don’t anticipate Benitez’ men managing anything from their weekend trip to Dean Court given their woeful away form this season, the threat of dropping down into the Championship has receded somewhat and they can at least start to breathe more easily.
Burnley remain very much in the danger zone with a measly two points separating them from the bottom three and they have a tough assignment ahead of them when they welcome to Turf Moor a Leicester City side who have won two of their last three games and hit the back of the net in all-but-one of their last eleven competitive outings. As for West Ham United, they will look to hammer the final nail into the coffin of Huddersfield Town as the Terriers look forward to the inevitable relegation back into the Championship, the leading bookmakers offering a wealth of free bets on the Premier League relegation market.
The top-flight action continues into Sunday afternoon with two televised games on offer. Fulham and Liverpool kick things off at 2.15pm, the SkySports cameras in attendance as Liverpool look to retake top spot in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s men will be in very high spirits having brushed aside Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena earlier this week on their way to the quarter-finals of the Champions League while Fulham are fighting a losing battle as they attempt to retain their Premier League status for another season.
The SkySports cameras will also be present at Goodison Park where Chelsea are the visitors at 4.30pm on Sunday. The Blues are in Europa League action on Thursday evening (result not known at time of writing) where they will be confident of holding onto their three-goal advantage from the first leg against Dynamo Kyiv. Maurizio Sarri’s men could only manage a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last Premier League outing and the Blues boss will be desperate to steer his side to a much needed win as they chase the final top-four berth. Can the visitors help ease the pressure on under-fire boss Maurizio Sarri on Sunday evening by beating Everton on Merseyside? We believe that they can.
There’s also an abundance of Championship action heading our way on Saturday afternoon
with Leeds United kicking things off at lunchtime with a local derby against Sheffield United. The Whites sit second in the division with two points separating them from table-topping Norwich City and they further underlined their title credentials when thrashing Reading 3-0 at the Madejski Stadium last time out. The visiting Blades are made of tougher stuff however and we can expect a closely-fought affair at Elland Road on Saturday.
League leaders Norwich City continue to dominate in the second tier and they extended their winning run to five games when beating Hull City 3-2 on Wednesday evening. The Canaries will be up against struggling Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Saturday afternoon and we anticipate the visitors sending the Millers further into danger by collecting all three points in South Yorkshire, the bookies giving away free bets on this crucial match.
At the opposite end of the Championship table, Ipswich Town look very much dead and buried and the chances of them mounting a great escape are starting to look highly unlikely. The Tractor Boys have managed to win just three of their 37 league outings this season and currently sit 14 points away from safety with just nine matches left to play. They will be up against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon and with the Tricky Trees still battling it out for the final play-off berth, we feel that this can only go one way.
Bolton Wanderers are also in the danger zone and their cause certainly wasn’t helped when they lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening. Indeed the Trotters have lost four of their last five games and as things stand they sit eight points away from safety, therefore we don’t fancy their chances of adding to their meagre points total when they travel to fellow-strugglers Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.
The end of the season is fast approaching and as such, things are hotting up in England’s top two divisions. With this in mind, why not take advantage of the many free bets which are being offered by the leading bookmakers and add even more excitement to your weekend football fix.
