Odds Shorten on Gundogan in PFA Player of the Year Betting
Liverpool and Manchester United dropped points this weekend, league leaders, Manchester City moved one step closer to regaining their Premier League crown with an impressive 3-0 win over Spurs at the Etihad. At 1/50, backing City to go on and lift the Premier League title now seems rather pointless. However, Manchester City’s relentless charge towards a third title in four seasons has catapulted several key players into contention for the PFA’s Player of the Year award. Providing odds from our betting partner, Paddy Power, we take a look at the latest Player of the Year betting.
Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) - 17/10
Manchester United midfielder, Fernandes, remains the bookies’ favourite, for now at least. The Portuguese international has been a revelation since signing for the Red Devils last January and in 2020 he became the first player to ever win four Premier League Player of the Month awards in a single calendar year. In the current campaign Fernandes has 14 goals and 9 assists in his 24 league games. Manchester United’s hopes of a top four finish lay firmly on the shoulders of their new talisman.
Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City) – 4/1
Manchester City fans feared the worst when Kevin de Bruyne’s long injury lay-off was announced but Ilkay Gundogan has been a revelation. Gundogan was named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for January and kicked off January with a blockbuster performance in City’s 3-0 demolition of Spurs.
Since the turn of the year, Gundogan has scored nine goals in nine Premier League games, making him the most prolific goalscorer across Europe’s top five leagues in 2021. If the German international can maintain his current form he will soon replace Fernandes as the bookies’ favourite in this market. However, it remains to be seen whether Gundogan will revert back to second-fiddle when de Bruyne returns to the City team.
Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) - 15/2
Aston Villa talisman, Jack Grealish, remains the dark horse in the market. As Villa continue to punch above their weight, Grealish continues to impress. The Premier League’s most fouled player has six goals and ten assists from his 22 league games so far.
Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) - 17/2
Harry Kane’s recent injury lay-off highlighted how important the England captain is to Spurs. The Kane-Son pivot has become one of the most potent in Premier League history and Kane has already chalked up 13 goals and 11 assists in the league this season.
At 11/2, Kane also offers excellent value in the Golden Boot betting market, especially with Paddy Power paying 1/4 odds for the top three places. Mo Salah (17 goals so far) is the odds-on favourite to claim the Golden Boot ahead of Kane. Next up comes Jamie Vardy (17/2) and Bruno Fernandes (10/1).
Ruben Dias (Manchester City) - 9/1
Ruben Dias’ impact on the Manchester City defence has been likened to Virgil van Dijk’s at Liverpool. The 23-year-old has shown maturity well beyond his years and City look to have finally found a long-term replacement for former captain, Vincent Kompany. Ruben Dias has played 20 Premier League games at the heart of City’s defence; keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding just eight times. Whilst defenders seldom get the recognition they deserve, it is hard to ignore the impact that the young Portuguese defender has had on the City backline. If you fancy Ruben Dias to claim the Player of the Year award then now is the time to back him, his odds are likely to shorten with every win and every clean sheet he earns.
- Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 10/1
- Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) - 12/1
- Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 14/1
- Son Heung-Min – 20/1
- John Stones – 25/1
