Liverpool vs Manchester City: Match Preview and Odds
Liverpool’s fading title defence faces arguably its toughest test to date on Sunday as the holders welcome Manchester City to Anfield. On the back of a tough few weeks for the reigning champions, Sunday could be win-or-bust for Liverpool. Here at freebet.com we preview this huge Premier League showdown, bringing odds courtesy of our betting partner, Paddy Power.
For several seasons, Anfield has been a fortress for Liverpool with the Reds remaining undefeated for more than three years at home. However, the dip in form so far in 2021 has been somewhat alarming. Liverpool have failed to score a single goal at home in the league this year, taking just one point from a possible nine. Jurgen Klopp’s stuttering side have now lost back-to-back games at Anfield. Liverpool have not lost three successive home league games since 1963. The latest defeat, a 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion has left Liverpool seven points adrift of league leaders, Manchester City, despite playing one game more.
In contrast to Liverpool’s miserable run, Manchester City are enjoying a superb run of form. City have won 13 consecutive games in all competitions, one short of the English top-flight record of 14 games achieved by both Preston North End in 1892 and Arsenal in 1987.
City’s relentless march towards another Premier League title has been built on an almost-impenetrable defence. City have kept six consecutive Premier League clean sheets and shipped just 13 goals all season.
Bore draw on the cards?
Liverpool’s inability to find the back of the Anfield net in recent games coupled with Manchester City’s rock-solid defence means that an away clean sheet is quite likely. Manchester City to win to nil should be considered at 11/4. Meanwhile, 33% of league games between the so-called ‘Big Six’ this season have ended in goalless draws. A 0-0 draw an Anfield on Sunday is available at 10/1.
If Liverpool are to get anything from Sunday’s game, then Mohamed Salah is their greatest hope. Whilst Sadio Mane faces a late fitness test and Roberto Firmino continues to misfire, Salah has carried the goal-scoring burden so far this season. Egyptian international, Salah, leads the Premier League goalscoring charts with 15 league goals so far this season. He can be backed at 5/1 to score first at Anfield on Sunday.
In past matches between these two rivals at Anfield, it is the home side that undoubtedly holds the advantage. The Reds have lost just one Premier League game at home to Manchester City and have gone 17 unbeaten since that solitary loss in May 2003. However, the current campaign has proved that home advantage doesn’t count for much without the fans there to get behind their team. In fact, there have been more away wins in the Premier League so far this season than home wins.
