Is Covid about to change the European football landscape? - The latest outright title odds
The latest outright title odds

There’s no denying that 2020 has been a crazy year and as the sporting world continues to be affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, could we be set to see a seismic shift in power throughout European football? The same few teams have dominated their respective domestic leagues over the past decade but as clubs struggle to adjust to the demands of a packed 2020/21 fixture schedule, we could see at least surprise league winner crowned next summer.

Here at freebet.com we take a look at some of Europe’s major football leagues and examine how the outright title odds have changed in the past few months. Whilst the bookies’ odds suggest the cream will rise to the top, the current uncertainty does mean there are hugely generous odds available on many of Europe’s biggest teams.

England: Premier League

Liverpool romped to a deserved maiden Premier League title last season and although they’re within touching distance of the league summit again this season, it has been far from plain sailing for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Liverpool were rocked by the long-term injury suffered by talisman, Virgil van Dijk, in the Merseyside derby and have often looked defensively vulnerable with and without the Dutchman. Liverpool’s defensive frailties were particularly obvious during their shock 7-2 drubbing at the hands of Aston Villa. In fact, last season’s champions have conceded more league goals (16) than rock-bottom Sheffield United (15).

The Reds remain the bookies’ favourites for now, helped by the continued struggles of several of their main rivals. Incredibly, a third of the way through the campaign Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all find themselves in the bottom half of the league table.

VBet’s odds suggest a belief that Manchester City will soon rise again but London pair, Chelsea and Spurs could be in the mix come the end of the season.

Current top four

Tottenham Hotspur (20)

Liverpool (20)

Chelsea (18)

Leicester City (18)

Outright odds (VBet)

Liverpool – 7/4

Manchester City – 7/4

Chelsea – 11/2

Tottenham Hotspur – 11/2

Spain: La Liga

The David Silva effect has seen Real Sociedad take a surprise lead in the La Liga title race. The Manchester City legend returned to his native Spain in the summer and along with exciting Spanish international, Mikel Oyarzabal, he has helped guide Real Sociedad to the La Liga summit. Since losing to Valencia in week one, Sociedad have put together a run of seven wins and two draws from their last nine league games.

Just one point from a possible six has seen Real Madrid slip off the pace slightly whilst Barcelona’s turbulent summer has carried on into the new season. Barcelona fought off the threat of losing Lionel Messi in the summer but the Catalan giants find themselves just three points above the relegation zone with a meagre 11 points from 8 games.

Current top four

Real Sociedad (23)

Atletico Madrid (20)

Villarreal (19)

Real Madrid (17)

Outright odds (Betfred)

Real Madrid – 11/8

Atletico Madrid – 7/4

Barcelona – 7/2

Real Sociedad – 16/1

Scotland: Premiership

Celtic claimed a record-equalling ninth consecutive Scottish Premiership title last season, emulating the achievements of Jock Stein’s great Celtic side of the 60’s and 70’s and the Rangers side that matched that run between 1989 and 1997. This season offered Neil Lennon’s side a chance to make history and win a tenth successive league title. However, even this early in the season, that looks unlikely.

Steven Gerrard has spearheaded Rangers’ charge to the top of the SPL table and his side do not look like slowing down. Rangers are unbeaten after 15 games (W13, D2) and incredibly they have conceded just three goals all season and none since September.

Current top four

Rangers (41)

Celtic (30)

Aberdeen (27)

Hibernian (26)

Outright odds (888Sport)

Rangers – 3/10

Celtic – 11/4

Italy: Serie A

Like Celtic in the SPL, Juventus have won Serie A in each of the past nine seasons and with Cristiano Ronaldo amongst their ranks it would take a brave man to bet against Juve lifting the title again this season. However, the Turin giants have got their campaign off to a stuttering start. The holders remain unbeaten but have drawn half of their eight league games so far.

The similarities between Scotland and Italy do not end there as a fallen giant has risen to the top of the table, a position occupied for most of the 1990s. For Rangers in Scotland, read AC Milan in Italy. Milan, spearheaded by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, have won 6 and drawn 2 of their first 8 league games to sit proudly on top of the Serie A table. Ibrahimovic leads to scoring charts with 10 league goals so far, 2 more than Cristiano Ronaldo and 3 clear of Romelu Lukaku.

Current top four

AC Milan (20)

Sassuolo (18)

Roma (17)

Juventus (16)

Outright odds (Betfred)

Juventus – 7/4

Inter Milan – 11/4

AC Milan – 9/2

Napoli – 7/1

Atalanta – 9/1

Germany: Bundesliga

Bayern Munich sit atop of the Bundesliga and are in pole position to claim a 31st German title. Bayern eased to title number 30 in 2019/20, winning by a 13-point margin. However, a ninth consecutive Bundesliga win won’t come quite as easy as it did last season. With eight games played, the Bavarian giants are one of four sides separated by just two points.

Current top four

Bayern Munich (19)

Borussia Dortmund (18)

Bayer Leverkusen (18)

RB Leipzig (17)

Outright odds (BetVictor)

Bayern Munich – 1/10

Borussia Dortmund – 6/1

RB Leipzig – 20/1

Bayer Leverkusen – 25/1
