Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev: Fight Preview and Odds
Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev have weighed in today ahead of their long-overdue world heavyweight title clash. WBA (Super), WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion, Joshua, will put his belts on the line against the dangerous Bulgarian challenger, Pulev, on Saturday evening knowing that a win is likely to set up an all-British unification fight with WBC champion, Tyson Fury. Thanks to odds from our betting partner, Paddy Power, we take a look at some of the most popular betting markets ahead of Saturday’s showdown.
Joshua and Pulev were first scheduled to meet back in October 2017 but the challenger was forced to pull out with a shoulder injury and was subsequently replaced by Carlos Takam.
At today’s weigh-in, both fighters weighed in relatively light. AJ tipped the scales at 17st 2lbs. Although Joshua has weighed in heavier than he did for the Andy Ruiz Jr rematch (16st 9lbs), he still cuts a far leaner figure than the AJ that stopped Carlos Takam (18st 2lbs) a little more than 3 years ago. Pulev meanwhile was slightly lighter than Joshua at 17st 1lb; his lowest weight for a fight since his second professional bout more than a decade ago.
What the bookies say
The bookies are backing Joshua to successfully defend his belts and their pre-fight odds suggest a stoppage is the most likely outcome. It’s now more than 4 years since AJ last stopped an opponent in the first half of a fight and his lighter physique could reduce his chances of an early stoppage. Joshua to win between rounds 7 and 12 looks incredibly generous at 2/1.
Challenger, Pulev, has never been known as a big puncher. Only 50% of his previous 28 wins have come via a stoppage and odds of 8/1 suggest than a win by KO on Saturday is unlikely. However, Pulev’s loss to Wladimir Klitschko in November 2014 remains the only blemish on an otherwise perfect professional record, highlighting just how dangerous an opponent the 39-year-old is.
