2000 Guineas Betting Preview and Odds
There’s top-class horse racing on both sides of the Atlantic this weekend with Newmarket hosting both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas whilst across the pond, Churchill Downs will see the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Whilst our neighbours at freebet.us offer a Kentucky Derby betting preview, here at freebet.com we will take a look at the first of the year’s five Classics; the 2000 Guineas. In what promises to be a wide-open race, we have handpicked a selection of horses tipped to run a big race, providing odds courtesy of our betting partners, Ladbrokes.
Aidan O’Brien has become synonymous with the UK’s five Classics in recent years and it will come as no surprise to see one of Ballydoyle’s own heading the betting.
O’Brien is chasing a sixth 2000 Guineas winner in ten years and Wembley offers their best hopes of success. Wembley stayed on strong to finish second in both the National Stakes at the Curragh in September and more recently in the Dewhurst. The step up to one mile is expected to suit and with Ryan Moore on board, he could be Aidan O’Brien’s leading hope.
Despite Moore opting to ride Wembley, the chances of Battleground should not be underestimated. Last seen when earning a credible second in the Breeders’ Cup in November, Battleground has already found success in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Vintage Stakes and Goodwood.
Competing the Ballydoyle lineup is 9/1 shot, Van Gogh. The third O'Brien challenger was runner-up in three Group races last year on good-soft ground before winning on heavy ground in Criterium International at Saint-Cloud. The Newmarket track will be considerably quicker than any he’s previously found success on so there are concerns he’ll be out-paced.
Thunder Moon may have finished behind Wembley in the Dewhurst but on National Stakes form, he could be the one to beat. Thunder Moon faded in the Dewhurst, therefore the question marks remain over his stamina on the longer trip. However, that third-placed finish was on softer ground and he will certainly benefit from the quicker ground we can expect at Newmarket.
Mutasaabeq was a late addition to the 2000 Guineas field, having been supplemented for this race at a cost of £30,000. The Charles Hills-trained colt is relatively inexperienced compared to some of the other big players in this race but he produced a lightning-fast win against several useful prospects in just his second run. The manner of that victory means he has to be taken seriously at Newmarket.
